How we should think about the Buckeyes now

Filed under: Uncategorized — John Gasaway @ 12:50 pm

Ohio State clubbed Duke 85-63 in Columbus last night, and you know you’ve scored a convincing win over the Blue Devils when a storied Durham alum like Grant Hill is saying you’re the best team in the country.

The Buckeyes did look magnificent, and let’s go ahead and declare that if this team continues to make threes like they did last night (8-of-14) Hill has made a sound analytical assertion: they are indeed better than Kentucky or anyone else. After all, Thad Matta‘s team already does everything else. They already make their twos, get to the line, take care of the ball, and clean the defensive glass like no one’s business. A little perimeter accuracy would make an already outstanding team even more scary. Understood.

I am, however, equally conscious of two additional facts: these guys are yet to play a game outside the Columbus city limits, and there’s no earthly way they’ll shoot threes as well as they did last year. Therefore I declare the race for the national championship still open. Good news!

Speaking of good news, if you’re a Buckeye fan you’re delighted to see the coalescence of an estimable Big Four so quickly in this strange post-Lighty, post-Diebler world: Jared Sullinger, William Buford, Deshaun Thomas, and Aaron Craft. Here are some pertinent facts on this group.

Sullinger and Buford are more or less where I expected them to be: outstanding. And if you’re surprised by Thomas draining 60 percent of his twos while carrying a big load on offense, you just haven’t been paying attention. While his defense hasn’t always been, uh, vigorous, it’s long been clear that Thomas is an offensive star in waiting, one who requires only minutes. His freshman year is therefore classified by hoops analysts in white lab coats as an example of the “Daequan Cook Phenomenon.”

The player that has surprised me is Craft, hitherto praised, accurately, as an outstanding defender (Seth Curry was pretty invisible in the first half last night, wasn’t he?) and little more. Previously I had rather thought the ceiling for Craft was 2009-vintage Chris Kramer, but that opinion is now undergoing renovation. Last night Craft was much more assertive on offense than he’s ever been in a game approaching this magnitude. If he can command some attention from opposing defenses already tasked with the unenviable challenge of guarding Sullinger, Buford, and Thomas, that is huge. Apparently Bruce Pearl was correct to covet this kid.

BONUS olive branch to a Scotsman even taller than I am!
Former Illinois big man Robert Archibald yelled at me on Twitter this morning, which wounds my Illini soul in a way that perhaps only a fellow downstater like Will Leitch can comprehend.

Archibald’s 2001 Illinois team (Frank Williams, Marcus Griffin, Brian Cook, Sergio McClain, Cory Bradford, Damir Krupalija, Lucas Johnson, Sean Harrington, et al.) was a joy to watch. The sheer presence of that bunch of nascent NFL tight ends bled hope from opponents simply by stepping on the floor. I’m still bitter (seriously, I’m getting mad just typing this) that the selection committee in its infinite wisdom could look at an Arizona team with Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson, Michael Wright, Loren Woods, Jason Gardner, and Luke Walton, and think “No. 2 seed.” In any normal year with a committee that could be trusted to handle complex tasks like opening doors and navigating stairs, that Illinois team would have hung a Final Four banner.

Robert’s mad at me because last night in the early stages of the Illini’s 71-62 win over Maryland in College Park I tweeted: “I am not in awe of Sam Maniscalco‘s decision making at the moment.” When I expressed my lack of awe the diminutive Maniscalco had just attempted a 1-on-3 fast break against the entire Terrapin front line with entirely predictable results. Naturally from that moment on the Bradley transfer proceeded to drain threes (24 points on 5-of-8 shooting beyond the arc) like a high school equipment manager in a viral YouTube video. Who knew.

Doubtless I should have followed up and noted that display, but Mark Turgeon‘s team isn’t exactly UCLA ’73, and anyway by then I was on to singing the praises of sassy new-look Virginia. So let me take this opportunity to say Sam Maniscalco, I doff my cap. You had the good judgment to get the ball to the guy with the hot hand: you.

And Robert Archibald, I salute you! Drop by the next time you’re in the NYC area. The first plate of haggis is on me.

Previewing (part of) the Iowa Caucuses of hoops

Filed under: Uncategorized — John Gasaway @ 1:59 am

The 13th ACC/Big Ten Challenge tips off tonight, and the new wrinkle this year is that the entirety of both conferences will be engaged in this closely-watched and over-analyzed contest that comes far too early but is nevertheless genuinely compelling. Nebraska, I salute you!

You may recall that the ACC won the first ten of these, while the Big Ten has emerged victorious the last two years. (Of course now that there are 12 games there could be a tie.) One-sided dominance that lasted an entire decade rightly focused our attention on which league actually wins the Challenge, but in the past couple years we’ve seen that, in a competition between rough equals, winning a league-wide series like this requires equal measures of strength and chance. To put it bluntly, determining which conference can piece together seven victories depends heavily on things like whether Boston College can win at home against Penn State. I understand why that question is vital to the second- and first-year head coaches involved. It is perhaps less vital to many others.

Which is why I’m interested in more than merely which conference wins. I’m interested in how Indiana looks in their first road game outside their home state against an NC State team that is, by far, the most talented opponent they’ve seen this season. I’m interested in whether Tony Bennett can show Michigan that he’s at last molded Virginia into something akin to the remorselessly effective Washington State teams that propelled him into his gig in Charlottesville. Most of all I’m interested in two games in particular. These brackets were set back in May and the two marquee contests still look very good.

Duke at Ohio State
Tuesday: ESPN, 9:30 ET
Forget Austin Rivers, if only for a moment. He’ll be drafted before any of these other guys he’s playing with, but right now he’s more solid than stellar. Rivers is shooting 37 percent on his threes, 46 percent on his twos, and 65 percent at the line. For a freshman to do that at Duke while attempting 28 percent of his team’s shots is certainly noteworthy, but at the same time it confirms what Mike Krzyzewski told Luke Winn in October. Seen in context Rivers has been great, but he suffers from invidious comparisons to a certain predecessor. He hasn’t been instant-sensation Kyrie Irving-great. With the likes of Irving, Wall, Rose, and Durant, context is never invoked.

Poor Coach K, burdened with a star freshman who hasn’t been quite as good in his first 376 possessions as we think a healthy Irving would have been across his whole freshman year. The Blue Devils are 7-0 anyway because they’ve combined two things that do not usually go together: accuracy on frequent threes (they’re shooting 46 percent, and threes have comprised 37 percent of their attempts — Seth Curry‘s hitting 57 percent of his treys), and regular trips to the foul line. I don’t write off either characteristic as a mere November oddity, because in fact the Blue Devils have played a very impressive schedule already. (And where did this new improved Ryan Kelly come from? I see you, young man, and your scary-good accuracy from both sides of the arc.) I just think that in particular the tremendous free throw imbalance that Duke’s enjoyed vis a vis their opponents will shrink if not vanish completely in Columbus. That’s Ohio State’s shtick too, and they’ll be playing at home.

The Buckeyes have scored 1.17 points per trip to this point despite the fact that they’re yet to find the range from the perimeter because their twos always go in, they don’t turn the ball over, and they, like Duke, go to the line all the time. Jared Sullinger has been roughly as monstrous as expected, as in 67 percent shooting on twos, and rebounding 32 percent of opponents’ misses while on the floor. But the new element in the mix is his 85 percent shooting at the line. If that, or anything near it, continues, Sullinger will have to be sent to the NBA in three weeks or so at the start of their season. He’ll just be too good. After Sullinger is forced to shake David Stern‘s hand, Thad Matta‘s team will still be pretty good. Though William Buford‘s teammates can’t yet make threes, Buford sure can (he’s shooting 50 percent thus far), and he’s doing it while accounting for 30 percent of his team’s shots during his minutes. Deshaun Thomas is the most efficient scorer in the history of Division I who shoots just 28 percent from beyond the arc — he’s been that good inside and at the line. And Aaron Craft has already recorded 21 steals in 303 personal defensive possessions. Watch to see where Craft is sent defensively. Given the Blue Devils’ sassy new no-point-guard configuration, Matta will have a decision to make there.

Wisconsin at North Carolina
Wednesday: ESPN, 9:30 ET
Watching Wisconsin’s season to date I can’t help but wonder if this whole thing was dreamed up by my colleague Ken Pomeroy to tease out the relative importance of strength of schedule. The Badgers have played the likes of Kennesaw State, Colgate, and UMKC, among others, and, as you may have heard, beaten them all silly. The question confronting Ken’s laptop, unavoidably, is whether it matters if a team beats Kennesaw State by 54 points (actual margin) as opposed to 25 (normal lopsided win). You and I, happily, are not Ken’s laptop, so we get to hedge our bets and invoke that hoary old piece of superstition known as the past. One hiccup versus North Dakota State in the Kohl Center in 2006 notwithstanding, Bo Ryan‘s teams have very often beaten the teams they should beat, and done so rather soundly. That ability has netted Ryan four Sweet 16 appearances, and one trip to the Elite Eight.

Then again the other night the Badgers administered a sound thrashing to BYU on a neutral floor, and the Cougars are not Colgate. Wisconsin is now very much a perimeter-oriented team, so, sure, if they can make threes against the Tar Heels — and Ryan’s team is shooting 47 percent from outside this year — there’s little doubt that the game will be on. The preseason buzz was focused on Jordan Taylor (in the Badgers’ phenomenal start, Taylor has been very un-phenomenal inside the arc), but thus far it’s been Ben Brust and Jared Berggren taking the lion’s share of the shots. And if you’re snickering at “Ben Brust and Jared Berggren,” well, I’m not. Wisconsin’s opponents this season have made 33 percent of their twos.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Carolina will beat that number, with or without the gimpy Harrison Barnes. Kendall Marshall will see to it. Marshall’s early-season numbers point to a point guard unlike any I’ve ever seen. I don’t mean unparalleled, I mean incomparable in the literal sense of the word. He’s different. You’ve heard of pass-first point guards, but if Marshall keeps this up I am coining the term shoots-never. To date the sophomore has accounted for just nine percent of UNC’s attempts while he’s on the floor. But he stockpiles assists like someone who obsessively tracks them to the exclusion of all else. His teammates are fine with that obsession, of course — they get the rock in position to score. If John Henson could just stay away from the free throw line he’d be as efficient as Ben Brust (high praise!). Good thing, too, because UNC has needed that efficiency: is it too early to worry about Tyler Zeller? I confess to being mildly surprised by both the 48 percent shooting inside the arc and the 66 percent accuracy at the line. Does he just need contacts?

Last thought. In Carolina’s last two games (a win against South Carolina and a loss against UNLV) opponents are shooting 40 percent on their threes. Wisconsin shoots those often, and so far they’ve done quite well. Watch the Badgers’ threes.

Pro Basketball Prospectus 2011-12 Timeline

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kevin Pelton @ 2:38 pm

When I awoke yesterday morning to find messages of sympathy in my Twitter at replies, I knew two things: A deal had been reached to end the NBA lockout (woohoo!) and it was time to get to work. For those of you who have been wondering, Bradford Doolittle and I will be publishing Pro Basketball Prospectus 2011-12, updated with the player moves that will take place in a hurry once free agency opens.

We anticipate releasing the book prior to the scheduled Christmas Day start of the 2011-12 regular season. Beyond that, we can’t tell you a specific date. In the best of circumstances, release dates for our books tend to fluctuate, and in this case we can’t predict exactly how quickly teams will fill out their rosters and allow us to complete our writing. I’d urge everyone to be patient, and note that we may not be able to tell you any more until the book is actually ready for download.

We’re confident the latest edition of Pro Basketball Prospectus will be worth the wait. We’ve used the extra time to beef up the section of essays in the back of the book with contributions from Prospectus newcomers Dan Feldman, Neil Paine and Sebastian Pruiti. We’ve also lined up a foreword in the tradition¬† of our college peers. We hope you anticipate reading the book as much as we look forward to publishing it.

It’s Morning in the NBA

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bradford Doolittle @ 9:40 am

Who knew that four words dripping with legalize could bring so much joy: Tentative agreement settlement reached.

This feels like one of those “where were you when you heard it” moments. My first inkling that a settlement was at hand came just before 4 a.m. Mountain time, arriving to me in an NBA city, just not the one in which I reside. I am visiting family in Salt Lake City for the holiday and have been feeling like a man out of time, with a foot seemingly in all four time zones.

Let me explain: Kevin Pelton and I have re-started the Pro Basketball Prospectus 2011-12 machinery and he of course is on the West coast. I am temporarily in the Mountain zone, while trying to stay on top of what was happening back in Chicago. Meanwhile, I’ve had my computer set on Eastern standard time for a couple of weeks, as I use that as my standard to determine my posting schedule for #SimSeason. In any event, I woke up at what here was an absurdly early hour to see the red light blinking on my phone. It was a text from my brother, containing two words: Big News!

That was a bulletin worth waking up to. First reaction: Yes! Second reaction: Oh crap, we’ve got three weeks to get a book out.

Details on the agreement are sketchy at this point. After all, the negotiations didn’t wrap up until the majority of us were safely tucked away in bed. As per my policy, I’d prefer not to analyze points that have been speculated upon but are not yet fact. Let’s wait until we get some hard, verified information from official sources. In their announcement press conference, the principles promised that details would be coming in relatively short order.

Nevertheless, I’ve worked out a posting schedule for the coming week to break down the CBA and related issues as information becomes available. Stay tuned for that. I can tell you for sure that once the revised schedule is released, I’ll be doing an analysis of which teams are the winners and losers, in terms of new strength of schedule factors as opposed to the original schedule.

There is also the matter of Sim Season, a feature that I’ve enjoyed tremendously and one which seems to have accomplished what we originally intended, which was to fill a little bit of the vacuum created by the missing games. In my intro yesterday, I noted that we’d continue Sim Season up to the day of a CBA announcement. I had very little faith that the day would come so soon but, in fact, it was made on that very same day.

But that’s where we’re at and we have to get back to business as usual. That means breaking down the new agreement, covering the coming free-agent frenzy and cranking out the third edition of our preseason annual. It’ll take me a couple of days to coordinate things with our new friends at Strat-O-Matic, but we’ll simulate the rest of the season and I’ll be doing a wrap-up post with those results early next week. A day or two after that, we’ll have a playoff post.

Then it’s back to the real thing, and thank goodness for that. The rest of this weekend, we can put the technicalities aside and bask in the moment. The NBA is back and no matter how much the players and owners have tried our patience over the last few months, I think we all agree that there could be no better news to punctuate our holiday weekends.

Vanderbilt’s only concern should be the SEC

Filed under: Uncategorized — John Gasaway @ 11:46 am

Cornelius Vanderbilt was a product of that most insular and self-conscious of New York City cultures, Staten Island, and he made his first fortune by operating a ferry between his island and the somewhat less insular and less self-conscious one across the way, Manhattan. Last night the university he founded won a basketball game on landfill scooped into that very same watershed. Vanderbilt beat Oregon State 64-62 in the “finals” (ha) of the Ticket City Legends Classic at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Brad Tinsley hit the game-winner for the Commodores with 4.5 seconds left.

Vandy is playing without 6-11 senior Festus Ezeli, who’s sidelined by a knee injury, and their allegedly porous defense has been the topic of much discussion. Mark me down as puzzled by the allegations and discussion. Allowing NC State to score 79 points in a 76-possession game, as Kevin Stallings‘ team did in the Legends semifinals, is surely not the end of the defensive world. The Commodores’ one unalloyed defensive weakness, the high percentage of two-point makes recorded by opponents, is currently being offset by excellent defensive rebounding and a fair number of takeaways.

If you must fret about this team I guess you could gaze nervously at their offense, which recorded just 0.82 points per trip in the loss at home to Cleveland State nine days ago, 0.92 points per possession last night against the Beavers, and is shooting 63 percent at the line as a team. Anyway, here are the givens:

1. Ezeli will return, and opponents’ two-point FG percentages will decline.

2. Jeffery Taylor is 6-7, fast, strong, and tenacious as an on-ball defender. Last night from press row Prospectus peep Drew Cannon and I spent entire possessions simply watching Taylor guarding Jared Cunningham. It was a tour de force.

3. Other prominent Commodores, it’s true, won’t make anyone think of the 1985 Chicago Bears, but, Cleveland State notwithstanding, this team’s recent history suggests it can and will score points at a level equivalent to the best offenses in the SEC. This team doesn’t need to be the ’85 Bears. A standard Vandy offense plus Ezeli and Taylor doing what they do on D will be sufficient even if, of course, Stallings can’t come out and say it in so many words.

Vanderbilt was hardly poetry in motion against OSU, but I still came away from watching them thinking this will be the best Commodore team of recent years when Ezeli returns. Then again we should remain alive to the possibility that the ‘Dores, Kentucky, Alabama, and Florida may all be better than they were last year — and better than any SEC team was in 2009. When these top-tier outfits start losing games to each other you’ll hear the usual tropes about toughness and wanting it more, but sometimes fate’s happy updrafts simply place multiple outstanding teams in close proximity to one another. The SEC has ferried itself from the island of measly majors to one populated by more robust leagues with startling speed. Pac-12 take note.

BONUS disclaimer! In welcoming the SEC to a more beastly realm I of course speak of the league’s top tier only, relative to the best teams in other conferences. Top to bottom the largest difference to be found between any two teams in the SEC is likely to be that between Nos. 4 and 5.

Welcome Neil Paine

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kevin Pelton @ 7:35 pm

Like many of you, we at Basketball Prospectus were sad to see Sports-Reference.com announce at the start of the month it was getting out of the blogging business. In particular, our friend Neil Paine was responsible for some of the most interesting research about the NBA. That’s why we’re so pleased to announce that, while continuing to work for Sports-Reference, Neil will be bringing his basketball writing to Basketball Prospectus and contributing regularly to our site as well as our Pro Basketball Prospectus annual.

If you’re not familiar with Neil’s work on the Sports-Reference family of sites or for the New York Times‘ Off the Dribble blog, expect research into questions like how much losing an inefficient go-to scorer hurts a team and evaluation of issues like the Heat’s performance in close games or how Larry Bird compares to Dirk Nowitzki in terms of advanced statistics.

Neil’s analysis is very much in the Basketball Prospectus spirit, but will offer a slightly different perspective. We couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.

Kyle Vinales for National Player of the Year

Filed under: Uncategorized — John Gasaway @ 11:00 am

Central Connecticut sits at 0-2 after losing close games to Yale and Niagara, but 6-1 freshman sensation Kyle Vinales should keep the Blue Devil faithful streaming into Detrick Gymnasium. I say save me a seat: you’ll be seeing me in New Britain if Vinales can keep up this incredible pace. Last night he scored 39 points in just 26 minutes in a losing effort on the road as CCSU fell to the Purple Eagles in OT.

I realize two games into a player’s career is a bit early to be touting National POY candidacies, but let’s face it: Vinales is better than Jared Sullinger and Harrison Barnes. Combined. I mean, just look at the kid’s line after two games:

    %Min %Shots FC/40 FTM-FTA Pct 2PM-2PA Pct 3PM-3PA Pct
     68.2 40.3 5.5 13-15 86.7 13-24 54.2 8-12 66.7

What’s not to love? He shoots more often than Jimmer did! His shots go in! He fouls like crazy (he was DQ’d with under eight minutes left in regulation last night). He coughs the ball up left and right (12 TOs in 113 team possessions). This freshman creates stats, good and bad, with gusto, and clearly head coach Howie Dickenman has given the young man a green light in more ways than one. There should be one official scorer assigned just to track Vinales. Who knows, if he keeps this up maybe he’ll get his picture uploaded onto his team’s site.

Will success spoil Cleveland State?

Filed under: Uncategorized — John Gasaway @ 10:57 am

Time once again to propose a large and daunting project, one that I myself don’t wish to do but would love to see done. (No, I see no paradox there.) You there, bored undergrad! Do us all a favor and compile a Situational Thesaurus of Coach-Speak.

I envision something where you could flip to, say, “Top-10 team loses in November at home to a mid-major,” and the suggested sound bite would be: “I told them we were getting ready to play a very good team.” What’s this? That’s what Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings actually did say after his No. 7 Commodores lost 71-58 in Nashville to Cleveland State yesterday?

Stallings is right. This is a very good team, and yesterday they made Vandy’s offense look really bad. The ‘Dores were playing without Festus Ezeli, of course (out with a knee injury), but you’d still think John Jenkins and Jeffery Taylor could do better than 58 points in 70 possessions. Give credit to the Vikings. D’Aundray Brown, last seen as a defensive force of nature in 2009-10 before a wrist injury sidelined him last year, looked potent on both sides of the ball for CSU: 18 points on 10 shots with seven steals.

When my compendium of coach-speak is completed, Cleveland State head coach Gary Waters will be able turn to the page marked, “Mid-major wins in November on the road against top-10 opponent” and say: “I told our guys handling adversity is easy, the question now is whether they’re ready to handle success.” No, Waters didn’t actually say that, but it sounds good and coach-speaky, doesn’t it? More importantly it’s a good question. Right now the Vikings are receiving all kinds of adulation for their “toughness” and “physical” play. The adulation is richly deserved, but in this case and with this team its phrasing could be deadly. The truth is Cleveland State probably needs to be a little less “tough” and less physical.

The one thing that could screw up the Vikings is that they foul too much (it’s like they think they’re Indiana!), and, worse, they do so without any corresponding benefit at all in the area of opponent turnovers. True, they did get the Commodores to cough up the ball 30 percent of the time yesterday, but I wonder if Waters fully realizes he now has a defense so good that, unlike in 2010, it doesn’t need to gamble for turnovers. Last year CSU allowed the Horizon league just 1.24 points per effective (TO-less) possession, a mark that was second in the league only to Valparaiso‘s effective-possession D. Meaning the Vikings are really good on defense straight-up, they don’t need to force an inordinate number of turnovers (as, for instance, Wright State so plainly did last year — sometimes gambling’s the smart play). Waters’ team plays excellent FG defense on both sides of the arc, and they’re OK on the defensive glass.

Of course the Vikes can continue to talk up being “tough” and “physical” to beat writers, and certainly they can kill each other all they want in practice, but the reality is last year they gifted free points to opponents. Stop doing that and you’ll truly be a very good team, one that rightly prompts opposing coaches to sound the alarm with their players.

BONUS “Oh no he did-nt” note! My good ESPN frere Myron Medcalf says “Cleveland State was an afterthought in preseason conversations about the Horizon League, most of which centered on Butler and Detroit.” Say what? Get this man a College Basketball Prospectus 2011-12 this instant! In that indispensable book he’ll find the Titans looking up at the Vikings in the order of predicted Horizon finish, despite the fact that UDM comprises a whopping 60 percent of the preseason all-Horizon first team (Ray McCallum, Jr., the currently inactive Eli Holman, and Chase Simon). Even without the now departed Norris Cole, CSU figures to have a lot of veteran talent in what this year will be a very young league. Indeed aside from their frequent and debilitating hacking, “everything else looks promising for this deep and experienced team.” True enough.
