I'm switching up the format a little today in hopes of replicating some of the drama I set up for myself. I reverted to my regular-season practice of scrolling the play-by-play without looking at the scores. I typed my observations as a I scrolled and bounced back in forth between the series as the games occurred. So if you read from top to bottom--and don't cheat--you'll experience the sim very closely to the way I did. The agate follows the narrative and it's been all organized for easy perusal. Tomorrow ... The Finals! As I type this, I don't know who it's going to be other than it's the winner of the Heat-Celtics against the survivor of Thunder-Spurs. Let's see what happened. ...
G1--CELTICS AT HEAT: Well, I extracted my the files from the zip that I received from Strat, so I've already discovered something important about these series. I'll reveal what I found out at the end. In the meantime, let's start our scroll with the Aging Celtics (I used title casing because I'm pretty sure that's about to become Boston's official moniker.) against the powerful Miami Heat, which start the series with Dwayne Wade sidelined because of a second-round injury. Boston looked like the younger team in the first quarter, enjoying a quarter-ending 11-point run to lead 30-19 behind Kevin Garnett's 10 points. Boston pushed the lead to 24 on Ray Allen's three late in the second and led 49-31 at the break. Miami struggled through the second half to rally, but closed within six on Chris Bosh's bucket with 58 seconds to play. It was too little too late. Boston wins Game One 91-83, a shocker on the Heat's home floor. Chris Bosh led all scorers with 36.
G1--SPURS AT THUNDER: The storyline for this series is pretty much the same one as it was when OKC took on Dallas in last season's Western Conference finals--young versus old. This time, however, the young upstarts have homecourt advantage. Tony Parker starts Game One on fire, pouring in 12 points as the Spurs grab a 14-7 lead. OKC answers with a 10-point run, seven by Russell Westbrook who has matched Parker's 12 points. Thunder lead 17-14, but the Spurs recover and lead by three after one quarter. In the second quarter, a Gary Neal trey pushes the San Antonio lead to eight. The Thunder go on another 10-point run, this one led by James Harden, and go up 31-29. It stays tight and low-scoring and we going into the break with the game tied at 40. After halftime, the Thunder build an eight-point lead but San Antonio goes on an epic 22-6 spree and score 14 in a row at one point. The Spurs lead 69-61. The bulge reaches 10 early in the fourth quarter, but Nick Collison spearheads a nine-point run for OKC, which closes within one. It's back-and-forth down the stretch. James Harden ties the game at 81 with a three, 3:42 left on the clock. Matt Bonner answers with a three on the ensuing possession. Harden scores again; Richard Jefferson splits a pair at the line. San Antonio is up 85-83 with 2:57 left. The offenses go cold. Finally, Kendrick Perkins scores in the lane to tie the score at the 1:08 mark. Again, no scores for a couple of possessions, but finally Serge Ibaka breaks open after a miss and dunks with five seconds to play. Ballgame. OKC 87, San Antonio 85. Thunder are up 1-0. Harden scored 19 points and hit all five of his three-point attempts.
G2--CELTICS AT HEAT: Wade is back and Game Two starts with a bang. Rajon Rondo scores off a fastbreak and Paul Pierce drains a three. Celtics are up 5-0. So that's exciting, but LeBron James reels off seven straight points and the Heat regain the advantage. It stays close for a bit, but James does it again, scoring five points of a seven-point run. Miami goes up 25-16 and James already has 15 points. The Celtics close within six, but Miami drills three straight three-pointers: Norris Cole, James Jones, Eddie House. Bang, bang, bang--Miami is up 38-23. I think I see where this is headed. The second quarter is more or less even-steven and Miami leads 51-35 at the break behind James' 19 points. In the third, Boston closes within 10, but Miami goes on a 15-3 run and takes a 70-48 lead. This game may be on ice. And indeed it is. Boston gets a flurry of points at the end of the game to improve the cosmetic aspects of the final score, but the Heat go up 1-0 with a 98-91 victory. James leads the way with 34 points and the series is even. The Celtics lost Rondo to an injury. He'll be out the next two games.
G2--SPURS AT THUNDER: After a thrilling Game One win, Oklahoma City looks to keep momentum on its home floor. It doesn't start well. Not at all. Ibaka scores the game's first bucket, but the Spurs go on a 23-3 run and lead 23-5 with 4:48 to go in the quarter. Yikes. Tim Duncan scores 11 points in the first and San Antonio leads by 19. The Thunder rally. Daequan Cook scores to trim the lead to nine midway through the second quarter. The Spurs survive the run and lead by 14 at the break, then score the first six points on the second half to go up 20. OKC rallies again, trimming the lead to seven on Harden's score late in the third. San Antonio scores the first nine points of the fourth and the Thunder are out of runs--Spurs win 100-87 to even the series. Westbrook and Kevin Durant combine to shoot 10-for-35 for the Thunder.
G3--HEAT AT CELTICS: I'm telling you, the scroll from Game Two made the Celtics look old. Old! There is no way they can keep up with the Heat in a pivotal Game Three, right? Well, they're able to do it at the outset, getting 12 points from Ray Allen and 11 from Pierce and leading 33-25 after one. The Heat rally, cutting the lead to four on an Eddie House three. Boston recovers and lead 61-47 at the half. Allen scored 21 and Pierce added 18 in the half. Wade catches fire in the third, scoring 19 points, but Boston still manages to keep its lead at 13 entering the final period. Allen has 29 points. Miami starts the fourth on a 14-4 run as Wade stays hot, but the spree is halted by an Allen trey. Boston leads 96-89 with 6:09 to play. James takes over, scoring three times during an eight-point spurt and Miami leads, 99-98 with 3:34 to play. Alternating trips to the foul line and Boston is up 102-101 at the 2:43 mark. And. That. Was. All. Boston does not score again and the Heat score the game's last 11 points to win 112-102. James finished with 31. Allen had 33 for Boston, which lost the homecourt advantage it stole Game One.
G3--THUNDER AT SPURS: Big game as the Spurs look to take advantage of seizing the homecourt advantage in Game Two. Tiago Splitter scores twice and the Spurs go up 10 early in the second quarter. The Thunder push back, closing within three on a James Harden basket, but the Spurs finish strong and lead 53-44 at the break. OKC starts the second half on an 11-3 run that was capped by a Durant drive and dunk. The Spurs lead 56-55. A short time later, Westbrook caps an eight-point run and the Thunder lead 63-60. San Antonio answers with seven straight. It goes back and forth for a few minutes, then a Durant three followed by a Perkins hoop ties the score at 73. OKC continues the momentum into the fourth and Durant's layup at the 5:28 mark puts the Thunder up by 14. That does it for Oklahoma City, which regains the series lead with a 104-94 win. Westbrook scored 30, Durant added 27.
G4--HEAT AT CELTICS: With Miami up 2-1, the Celtics can't afford a loss on their home floor. The games starts as a tight slugfest until Boston goes on a 14-point run late in the second quarter and leads 47-32 at the half. Ray Allen scores 17. The second half was devoid of drama. Boston maintained its lead then blew the game open with a 15-point run. Boston wins 99-74 to even the series. Allen scored 32 points.
G4--THUNDER AT SPURS: The Thunder went into Game Four feeling greedy, knowing another win on San Antonio's home floor would just about clinch the franchise's first trip to the Finals since the days of Gary Payton in Seattle. A close, back-and-forth first half is capped by two Duncan free throws to tie the game 43-43 at the break. San Antonio goes ahead by eight with a third-quarter run and leads by seven going into the fourth. Reggie Jackson caps a six-point run and OKC closes within 66-64. Jackson starts a seven-point spree with a trey later in the quarter that leaves the Thunder ahead 72-71 with 4:59 to play. Points are hard to come by down the stretch. Manu Ginobili ties the score with a hoop at the 1:52 mark but that's all the scoring in regulation. In the extra session, Westbrook score three times during a 9-2 run and the Thunder hold on, 89-85, and go up 3-1 in the series.
G5--CELTICS AT HEAT: We know that the winner of Game Five in an even series is in awfully good shape to advance, so this is a big one. It's another close dog fight early. Garnett scores midway though the second to tie the score at 29. Then it's Miami doing what Miami does--a 14-point run to seize control. JaJuan Johnson scores just before the half to end the rally, but Miami leads 43-31 at the break. Boston can't string together anything in the third and falls behind by 16. Finally, a 10-point Heat spree cracks the game open in the fourth. Miami wins 102-74 and heads back to Boston with a chance to advance to the Finals for the second straight season. Dwyane Wade pours in 45 points to lead Miami.
G5--SPURS AT THUNDER: The Spurs are in trouble, down 3-1 and heading into a buzzsaw at the Ford Center. But these are the Spurs and you can't expect a Gregg Popovich team to go down quietly. The first half is a copy of the same in Game Three. Back and forth, close, low scoring. Westbrook scores at the horn in the second quarter and OKC leads 52-51 at the break. San Antonio hangs in. Matt Bonner scores twice in a row, his second hoop midway through the third putting the Spurs ahead 69-67. Oklahoma City answers with a nine-point burst and eventually takes a 15-point lead early in the fourth. The Spurs make a couple of modest runs, but Oklahoma City blows the game open down the stretch and wins 102-86. The Thunder are your Western Conference champs.
G6--HEAT AT CELTICS: Boston is trying to stay alive on its home floor and rides a 12-point rally in the second quarter to an early 40-28 lead. An eight-point run a few minutes later pushes the lead to 17 and Boston is up by 14 at the half, 50-36. However, Boston suffers a key loss when Allen goes down in the second quarter. He does not return. The Celtics stave off a couple of mini rallies in the third and still lead by 14 going into the final period. The Celtics go up 83-66 on a Big Baby Davis layup with 9:38 to play. The Heat answer with a seven-point spurt but Boston maintains an 11-point lead after Rondo's layup with 5:21 to play. Miami closes within six on a Wade three-point play. Garnett scores, but Miami runs off four more points and is within 93-89 at the 2:52 mark. Jeff Green hits a jumper to give Boston some breathing room. Bosh and James score for Miami, which trails 95-93 at the two-minute mark. Boston can't score. Bosh hits two free throws to tie the score and Mario Chalmers drains a three with 29 seconds to play, putting the Heat up 98-95. Boston isn't dead. Delonte West pops open and hits one from deep, tying the score with 11 seconds left. Then comes controversy. Bosh sneaks in from the baseline and goes up for a layup, which Garnett blocks from behind. Wait, what's this? A whistle! Garnett is called for the foul with one second left. Bosh hits two free throws and Miami wins 100-98. Ugh. You can't make that call in that situation! Strat doesn't assign referees, but I'm going to go ahead and blame Violet Palmer. It's the Heat against the Thunder in the Finals, which isn't too shabby. ... By the way, that thing I said I noticed right off was that after I extracted the files, I saw that there were 11 boxes. So I knew at least one of the series didn't last too long.
