There was one shocker in the second round, at least to me, and several key injuries impacted the action. In most cases, the shorthanded team was able to compensate. Ewing Effect in a simulation? Maybe. Anyway, the conference finals are set--I'll let you scroll down to see the combatants. Conference finals results will be up Wednesday and we'll crown a champion. Miami 4, Orlando 2
Dwight Howard scored on a fastbreak early in the fourth quarter in Game One, capping a nine-point run and pulling Orlando within two. Howard is the biggest nightmare matchup in the NBA for many teams, but especially for the Heat, which is weak in the middle and has two of the best penetrators in the league. Could the Magic upset the Heat? It went downhill fast. Miami outscored Orlando 26-10 the rest of the game. Chris Bosh scored 34 points. Worse, Howard went down with an injury late in the game and missed the next two contests. Without Howard around, Miami romped in Game Two as Mike Bibby got hot from deep and sank six three-pointers. Orlando pulled out the third game, getting seven guys scoring in double figures with Howard out. Howard was back for Game Four, but LeBron James recovered from a shoddy third game to pour in 41 points and Miami seized a commanding lead. Orlando stayed alive with a Game Five win as Howard put up 27 points and 26 (!) rebounds. The Heat closed it out in the sixth game, overcoming a 12-point halftime deficit to win going away. Howard had 33 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks in the clincher but in the Sim Season universe, that was the game that sent him into free agency.

Well, this one won't go over too well with my friends in Chicago but it looks like it was last hurrah time for the Celtics. Boston set the tone by stealing Game One in Chicago in a slugfest. A 10-2 run for Boston late in the game did the trick. The Bulls got even in the second game behind a vintage performance from Derrick Rose. But Boston forced 25 turnovers in Game Three, eight by Rose, and grabbed the series lead. The Celtics pushed Chicago to the brink with a dramatic win in Game Five. Ray Allen hit a big three and Paul Pierce a couple of free throws down the stretch. Boston completed the shocker with another win in Chicago in the fifth game. Boston had six players in double figures, 33 assists and shot 62 percent from the floor. The Celtics advance to take on the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Grizzlies went into the rematch of last year's shocking first-round upset hoping to duplicate the feat and break through to the West finals. It looked like they were on track when Memphis stole the first game in San Antonio, just as it did last year. The Grizzlies had a 42-12 edge in fastbreak points in the contest. San Antonio drew even in Game Two, building a big early lead and holding on. However, the Spurs lost Tim Duncan to injury for the rest of the series. Memphis rolled in Game Three, leading wire to wire and going ahead by as many as 32 points. With Duncan out and the Grizzlies up 2-1, it looked grim for San Antonio. The Spurs responded by winning three in a row. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker combined to score 54 in Game Four. Richard Jefferson scored 24 and DeJuan Blair led a dominating performance on the boards in Game Five. Game Six was a classic. The teams exchanged one-point leads several times in the final minutes. Ginobili's three put San Antonio up two with 1:27 to play. Zach Randolph tied it with a basket in the lane. Tony Parker hit a jumper with 58 seconds left and neither club scored the rest of the way. San Antonio overcame Memphis' 63-percent shooting by making 14 three-pointers.

Three teams have combined to win the last 13 Western Conference titles--the Lakers, Spurs and Mavericks. The Lakers and Mavs are gone and the Spurs have clinched a berth in Sim Season's West finals, so the winner of this series will take on the Spurs and emerge as the candidate to finally bring some new Western blood to the NBA Finals. OKC took the drama out of this matchup by winning the first three games, though the individual games in the series were chock full of drama. Wes Matthews' basket with 46 seconds to go in the first game gave Portland a one-point lead, but Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka scored down the stretch to give the Thunder the win. The second game was also tight. LaMarcus Aldridge scored with 27 seconds left to pull Portland within two, but Russell Westbrook sealed the win with a pair of free throws. 'Close but no cigar' was Portland cliche of the day in a Game Three loss as the Blazers' offense went limp in the final minutes. Down 3-0, Portland finally broke through in Game Four behind 28 points off the bench from Gerald Wallace. The Blazers raised some eyebrows by winning in Oklahoma City in Game Five when Nicholas Batum drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer. Unfortunately for Portland fans, they weren't able to take the momentum back to the Rose Garden. The Thunder closed out the series and earned a shot at San Antonio in Game Six. Westbrook scored three times in a 15-2 run early in the second half that put OKC in the driver's seat.
