Every November, the NBA's Bulls and the NHL's Blackhawks are effectively kicked out of Chicago's United Center for two weeks because of an infestation of elephants, clowns and contortionists. The Ringling Bros. become the anchor tenant at the UC during that span, as its sports occupants set out for what is known as the Circus Trip. The Bulls suffered through some lean years during the first decade of this century and that annual November trip almost invariably meant Chicago would be digging out of an early-season hole. Perhaps the best sign that last year's Bulls would become a breakout squad was that they returned home with a 4-3 record on the dreaded Circus Trip.
Fast forward to this season. There are no real NBA games being played. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau is still offering up his narrow arsenal of vanilla quotes, only he's doing it while serving up Thanksgiving dinners to needy folks around town rather than in the UC's press room. The circus is here for its annual occupation, sending the surging Blackhawks on the road for six road games in 11 days. The Bulls are scattered to the four winds, waiting for the ravaged labor talks to resume in some fashion. But not in Sim Season. The virtual Bulls have been on the road for awhile now and are doing just fine.
This year's Circus Trip was slated to be an eight-game sojourn and it began with a loss at Washington on Nov. 13. Not a good sign, especially since Chicago had to cross the country for the second game of the trip in Portland. But the Bulls haven't lost since. The five-game winning streak reach a high point on Tuesday, when Chicago took on the red-hot Denver Nuggets, the top-ranked team in Sim Season entering the game. Last season, the Bulls played at Denver without Derrick Rose, who sat out with a bum wrist. The Bulls still took the Nuggets to the final buzzer, with C.J. Watson stepping into Rose's shoes and enjoying a career game. What happened this time around? Read on for that, as well as notes on the six other games on Tuesday.
Through last night, we've played the 159 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.

PACERS 118, PISTONS 104: There wasn't a lot of defense being played in a game that was paradoxically slow paced and high scoring. It was close, too, at least for 3 1/2 quarters. The first half was a duel between Darren Collison and Rodney Stuckey. Charlie Villanueva's bucket at the end of the third quarter left the Pistons up one. Detroit appeared to be in good shape when Tracy McGrady's layup put the Pistons up five midway through the fourth. But Indiana outscored Detroit 30-11 over the last six minutes and handed the Pistons their seventh straight loss. The Pacers put up their best Offensive Rating of the season and won their third straight to get back to .500. Danny Granger scored 17 of his 30 after halftime, while Stuckey led the Pistons with 27 points. Though Lawrence Frank managed to keep the overall pace slow for his Pistons, Indiana still ran effectively, outscoring Detroit 26-4 in transition.

CELTICS 118, WIZARDS 104: The Wizards were back at home after a successful 1-3 road trip. Successful? Well, you might remember that Washington lost its first 25 road games last season didn't win its first away from home until Feb. 13. Nevertheless, the Wizards went into Tuesday's matchup with Boston 30th in the league in point differential, 30th in defensive efficiency and 27th in offensive efficiency. The NBA can shock you several times over the course of season. But not on Tuesday. Not in Washington. The Celtics held a comfortable, if not overwhelming, advantage the entire game and took the wire-to-wire victory. Paul Pierce had a huge game, putting up 28 points 16 rebounds, three assists and five steals. The Wizards got 20 points, 13 boards and four blocks from JaVale McGee. Andray Blatche's outing was cut short by injury and he's expected to miss the Wizards' next contest.

HEAT 107, HAWKS 71: Let's get one thing clear--this game was a snore. I made a snide comment the other day about the Heat sucking the joy out of hoops with their sheer level of talent. Seems like in Sim Season, without the trifles of actual basketball to consider, that may actually be the case. The Heat led by 22 at the half, extended the lead a bit in the third quarter, then held Atlanta to eight points in the fourth. Dwyane Wade scored 33, LeBron James added 28 points, 10 rebounds and four steals and the Heat even "held" the Hawks to a 9-of-17 showing from the foul line. Miami's 36-point romp represented its largest margin of victory during its current nine-game winning streak, which started right after the Heat dropped its season opener at New York.

LAKERS 119, GRIZZLIES 110: Nice matchup between the 6-3 Grizzlies and Lakers, who arrived in Memphis on a five-game winning streak. It was a big first half for Memphis, which went on an extended 26-13 run and led by 15 before Derek Fisher finished the first half with a three for the Lakers. L.A. had the game even by the latter stages of the third quarter, tying the game on a Matt Barnes trey. The Grizzlies fell behind by 12 and couldn't get stops down the stretch to become the Lakers' latest victim. Kobe Bryant went off for 39 points, Pau Gasol added 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks and the Lakers got a key bench contribution from Derrick Caracter, who scored 10 points in the first half. Zach Randolph had 22 points and 19 rebounds before fouling out for Memphis.

76ERS 103, MAVERICKS 96: I wouldn't go so far as to call this one of those shockers that I referred to earlier, but it was definitely a surprise for Philly to go in and win on Dallas' home floor. The Mavericks had won four straight and seven of eight and went into the game as solid 12-point favorites. Jodie Meeks propelled the Sixers to a fast start with four three-pointers in the first quarter and Philly grabbed a 14-point advantage. Evan Turner's free throws late in the first half gave the Sixers a 22-point bulge. The Mavericks responded, finishing the half on a 13-2 run that featured a three-pointer from J.J. Barea and two from Peja Stojakovic. In the third, the Sixers pushed the lead back to 21 and the Mavericks cut it back down to 11. Dallas closed strong, trimming the lead to five on Jason Kidd's hoop with 1:06 to play but it was too little, too late. Meeks led a balanced offense with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and the Sixers ran up a 26-10 edge in transition. The Sixers hit 9-of-11 from deep.

BULLS 110, NUGGETS 100: The Nuggets had won for straight and eight of nine, mostly by frightful scores, but the Bulls rolled into the Pepsi Center on the strength of four straight road wins. Chicago is nearly unbeatable when it is able to get the kind of balanced offensive contributions that allow Derrick Rose to become as much of a distributor as a scorer. That's exactly what the Bulls got on Tuesday. Luol Deng led the way with 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Rose added 23 points and 10 assists, while Carlos Boozer, Ronnie Brewer and Joakim Noah all scored in double digits. The Nuggets led by two at the break and extended the lead to six before Boozer keyed a seven-point run that put the Bulls in front. Chicago eventually pushed the lead to 11 as Boozer scored 10 of his 20 in the third period. Nene capped an 11-4 burst that drew Denver within two, but Chicago answered with a nine-point run. The last three of those hoops were fastbreak buckets by Rose and the Bulls breezed from there, handing Denver its first home loss of the season.

SUNS 114, HORNETS 110: In terms of excitement, the Suns and Hornets gave us our game of the night. New Orleans jumped on top early, grabbing a 10-point lead on Chris Paul's layup early in the second quarter. The Suns promptly reeled off 13 straight points, a run started by Vince Carter's four-point play. The Hornets finished the half strong and looked like they were going to go into the break up a point, but Steve Nash stole the ball and scored at the second-quarter buzzer to put the Suns ahead. The game stayed close through half the third quarter, but Nash and Grant Hill keyed a 16-2 run to finish the period that left Phoenix up by 18. The Hornets rallied in the fourth but ran out of time, with Marco Belinelli's three at the buzzer representing the apex of their comback. Paul was the game's standout player with 24 points and 17 assists.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
