Last season, the Nuggets' season took off after they traded franchise stalwart Carmelo Anthony and point guard Chauncey Billups to the Knicks for a gaggle of players that included Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Raymond Felton. Instead of wilting in the aftermath of losing its longtime star, Denver instead finished the season by winning 19 of its last 26 games, before losing an exciting five-game series to Oklahoma City in the playoffs.
The lockout was not kind to the depth Denver coach George Karl put to such good use last spring. Chandler signed in China, which prohibited him from returning once the lockout was settled. (Which it was in our sim-world, of course.) J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin went the same route, while Felton was flipped to Portland prior to the draft for veteran Andre Miller.
So Karl found himself with a tightened rotation once Sim Season kicked off, one which features first-round rebounding and defense specialist Kenneth Faried. Faried is averaging better than 11 rebounds per 40 minutes thus far, but he's shooting just 28 percent from the field. Why then are the Nuggets the last unbeaten team remaining in the league? Why to they sport a remarkable +18.6 average point differential?
Two reasons: Offense and defense. So far, the Nuggets have averaged 127.7 points per 100 possessions, far eclipsing Chicago, the league's second-most efficient offense. The Nuggets have been the league's best-shooting team and have the second-lowest turnover rate. In his expanded role, Gallinari is third in the NBA in scoring with a robust 30 per game average.
At the other end, Denver ranks fourth in efficiency and Faried has been a big part of that. Not only has he acquitted himself well on the boards, but he's averaging 1.5 blocks and 3.0 steals per 40 minutes. These are key reasons why he's second on Denver in plus-minus despite an almost total inability to make a shot. In the run-up to the last draft, I suggested Faried might be a player in the mold of Hall-of-Famer Dennis Rodman. I'm not shipping Faried off to Springfield, Mass., by any stretch, but stylistically, the comparison seems apt. At least in Sim Season.
Through last night, we've played the 68 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.

MAGIC 107, JAZZ 93: Jason Richardson hit 6-of-7 from three-point range and Brandon Bass scored eight points of a 15-5 Orlando run that broke up a close game in the fourth quarter. Rookie Enes Kanter got his first start for Utah but foul trouble limited him to eight points and two rebounds in 16 minutes.

CLIPPERS 114, RAPTORS 104: One night after getting embarrassed in Chicago, the Clippers got 31 points from Eric Gordon and a 29-point, 18-rebound line from Blake Griffin to steal the road win in Toronto. The Bulls dominated the Clippers on the boards in Tuesday's rout, outscoring L.A. 20-1 on second-chance points. Vinny Del Negro's charges turned that around against the soft Raptors, holding a 19-4 edge in the second-chance category. Andrea Bargnani scored 28 for Toronto.

KNICKS 95, HAWKS 82: Amar'e Stoudemire scored 14 of his 21 points to help the Knicks jump out to a 17-point first-quarter lead. Atlanta managed to avoid the blowout, but never really made a serious run at New York. Landry Fields matched Stoudemire's team-high 21 points and helped harrass Atlanta's Joe Johnson into a 3-of-17 shooting performance.

PACERS 96, BUCKS 80: The Pacers entered into a Scott Skiles-style scrap and emerged with their third win in a row. Indiana held Milwaukee to 34 percent shooting and outscored the plodding Bucks 28-10 in transition. Tyler Hansbrough had 17 points and nine rebounds and shot 5-of-6 from the field. Remember those first batch of power rankings I unveiled the other day? Here's a sneak preview of the second week: Milwaukee won't be in the top spot any longer.

76ERS 131, ROCKETS 122, OT: This game was tight all the way as neither team held a double-digit lead in the contest. Luis Scola's free throw in the final seconds of regulation knotted the score, but he missed the second shot, sending the game into overtime. In the extra session, the Sixers scored 10 of the first 12 points. Then Jodie Meeks hit a three with 35 seconds to play, giving Philly a nine-point lead--the biggest either team had in the game. That turned out to be the final margin.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
