I have fond memories of rooting against the Lakers on Sunday night dating way back to listening to Chick Hearn and Keith Erickson calling the Showtime Lakers back in the days of UFO-sized satellite dishes. For me, the late Sunday Lakers game has always represented the page turning moment from one week to the next.
Last night's Lakers-Hornets game marked the end of the first week of Sim Season, which can only mean one thing: Power rankings! You should never really present the results of a power rankings formula this early. But I'm going to do it anyway. Just keep in mind that at this point, one or two blowouts as well as unwieldy strength-of-schedule scores result in some extreme early ratings.

NOTE: POW, our formula for a team's power rating, is an estimate of
a team's "true talent" level expressed as wins per 82 games. The
formula takes into account point differential, home-road performance,
record in close games and strength of schedule.
That's how it all played out in Week One, through which we've played the 45 games the NBA hasn't as part of our Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the night's action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
A reminder: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price. NOTE: The offer has been extended and now expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Nov. 20. Enjoy!
CAVALIERS 93, CLIPPERS 91, OT: Early, it was a duel between Antawn Jamison and Eric Gordon. Both scored 12 points in a dead-even first period. The Cavs, seeking their first win of the season, led by a point both at halftime and the end of the third quarter. It stayed close. L.A.'s Ryan Gomes drilled a three with 4:43 to play, putting the Clippers up five. Cleveland answered with a seven-point run that included a layup and two free throws from Kyrie Irving. Gordon hit a jumper with 1:26 to play, then neither team scored for the rest of regulation, giving us our first overtime session of the season. Blake Griffin scored on consecutive possessions to put the Clippers up two with 2:39 to go in the extra session. Baron Davis scored twice in a row in transition to put the Cavs up by a deuce, but Eric Bledsoe answered with a three to snatch the lead back for L.A. With the shot clock winding down, Davis sank a clutch three with nine seconds left. The Clippers had one final chance, but Griffin was called for a charge and Cleveland escaped with the road win. Omri Casspi had 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Cavs, Irving added 11 points, four rebounds and six assists while fellow rookie Tristan Thompson chipped in with nine points and five boards off the bench.

HEAT 108, WIZARDS 86: At the outset, it looked like the Heat were poised for a complete dismantling of the Wizards. LeBron James scored 10 points as Miami jumped out to a 16-2 lead. The Wizards climbed back and closed within 29-26 midway through the second quarter on Shelvin Mack's transition hoop. Washington eventually tied the game on Nick Young's three with 7:25 to go in the third quarter. The Heat responded with a 9-1 burst to keep the Wizards at bay, then pulled away in the fourth quarter. James had a monster line with 39 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Ultimately, Washington never led in the game and fell to 0-3. John Wall had 15 points, five boards and nine assists but also committed nine turnovers.

MAGIC 103, 76ERS 92: The Magic had runs of 14-4 and 9-0 to build a 26-point first half lead with Gilbert Arenas--a dead cinch amnesty lock in the real McCoy--scoring 15 points. The Sixers finished the half with a 14-1 surge. But that was the high point for Philly, as Orlando led by double figures most of the rest of the way and never led by fewer than eight points. The Magic evened its record at 2-2, getting 23 points and 12 boards from Dwight Howard and a season-best 20 from Arenas.

PISTONS 85, KNICKS 71: This was a tight game throughout before the Pistons stunned the Knicks with a 14-0 run to finish the game and held New York scoreless over the last 4:43. Rodney Stuckey led the finishing kick and scored a game-high 22 points. Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points and the Knicks got promising results from rookie Iman Shumpert, who put up six points, three boards, four assists, two steals and a block in 15 minutes. SUNS 112, TRAIL BLAZERS 111: The Blazers held a modest lead for nearly three quarters before Channing Frye's layup put the Suns up late in the third quarter. The Suns extended the lead to eight but Portland went on a 15-3 tear, during which Wesley Matthews scored eight of his 28 points. His three-pointer with 2:44 left capped the surge and put Portland up by four. Marcin Gortat and Steve Nash scored on consecutive possessions to draw the Suns even. Frye hit two free throws to tie the score with 1:27 remaining, then a short while later hit a three to put Phoenix up 112-109 with 31 seconds on the clock. Matthews beat Vince Carter and drew a foul, and his two free tosses drew Portland within one. Out of timeouts, the Blazers failed to foul after the inbounds, though Gortat was hit with a charging foul with two seconds remaining. Portland was unable to get off an attempt at a game-winning shot and the Suns escaped with their perfect record intact.

LAKERS 116, HORNETS 97: The Lakers were taking on the 2-0 Hornets and looking to rebound from a loss at unbeaten Phoenix. Despite Kobe Bryant's early hot shooting, New Orleans led at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to as many as nine in the second. Bryant and Andrew Bynum led a Lakers charge that tied the score, but Carl Landry's hoop at the second quarter buzzer gave the Hornets the halftime lead. The Lakers went on a 14-4 splurge at the end of the third quarter and scored the first four points on the fourth to open up a 13-point bulge. The Lakers pushed the lead to as many as 27 points and handed New Orleans its first defeat. Pau Gasol scored 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting to lead the Lakers and Bryant added 26 points.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
