Sometimes there is a hangover from a banner-raising ceremony. The Heat found that out on Halloween five years ago. After a spirited pregame ceremony at AmericanAirlines Arena commemorated Miami's first NBA crown, Dwyane Wade and company found themselves playing in an actual game against the up-and-coming Chicago Bulls. The Bulls ran Miami off the floor by a score of 108-66.
Fast forward to last night, when Mavericks owner Mark Cuban lorded over the pregame celebration of Dallas' first championship. The game was almost anticlimactic, and the latest up-and-coming Bulls squad was ready to go. There was no blowout this time, but reigning MVP Derrick Rose poured in 41 points to lead Chicago to the Opening Night win. The new season is here, Mavericks fans.
Elsewhere, highly-touted rookies Alec Burks and Enes Kanter made their NBA debuts for the Utah Jazz, who are looking to rebound from a terrible 2010-11 season. The rookies did fine, but it was veteran Al Jefferson who led Utah's rout of the Houston Rockets. In Los Angeles, Derek Fisher was back where he is supposed to be--on the court, in the Lakers' starting lineup, not in some banquet room at a hotel in New York. LA was taking on the Thunder, which may be the favorite to win the West this season. Despite a big game from OKC's Kevin Durant, the Lakers were able to overcome a poor outing from Kobe Bryant.
Anyway, that's how it all played out on the first night of Sim Season, our simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. Along with our partners at Strat-O-Matic, we'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of the first full slate of action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the night's action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
BULLS 107, MAVERICKS 103: In a back-and-forth game, the Ronnie Brewer led a late Bulls charge with three straight baskets, two in transition, to give Chicago control. Brewer started at two-guard for Tom Thibodeau and did a nice job, scoring 14 points in just seven shots. However, it was Rose that dominated the game with 41 highly-efficient points in 36 minutes. Bulls fans will be most heartened by his 21 free-throw attempts--a trend that bodes well for Chicago should it continue. The defending champs got five three-pointers from Jason Kidd, but couldn't overcome Dirk Nowitzki's 3-for-15 night.

JAZZ 115, ROCKETS 94: The Jazz dominated the glass and the paint, spoiling the Rockets debut of new coach Kevin McHale. Alec Burks scored 14 points in his first NBA game for Utah and fellow newcomer Enes Kantner added 12 of 4-for-5 shooting. Marcus Morris scored just two points in 19 minutes for Houston.

LAKERS 107, THUNDER 104: The contrast of styles was on full display as the Lakers outscored Oklahoma City 38-20 in the paint under new coach Mike Brown, but the high-flying Thunder had a 30-10 edge in transition. The game was decided at the line, where OKC uncharacteristically missed eight times. Russell Westbrook picked up where he left off in last year's playoffs by hoisting up 27 shots, making just seven. Kobe Bryant was 5-of-19 for LA, but Andrew Bynum scored 19 points off the bench for the Lakers. The Thunder led 90-88 with 6:46 to go before an eight-point Lakers run that featured back-to-back threes from Matt Barnes and Steve Blake and a layup from Bynum.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
