Redrafting the NBA
Round Nine

After Drew Cannon ranked the NCAA's top 100 players, we wanted to do the same for the NBA. In the interim, a host of player rankings popped up all over the Internet. So instead, we decided to try something different: Redrafting the NBA.

Over the last three weeks, Basketball Prospectus' four NBA analysts have been drafting two teams apiece for a total of eight teams and 96 players. We will be selecting players strictly on the basis of expected performance during the 2011-12 season, giving our own ranking of sorts--though one affected by positional scarcity and other outside factors.

Previous rounds: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

65. Dan A - Anderson Varejao, C, Cleveland Cavaliers
I wasn't thrilled with this team's front-line defense, and I don't think any other available players approach Varejao's ability on that end. Admittedly, I reached a bit for him, especially given his injury. But nobody else left--Monta Ellis and Carlos Boozer, to name a couple options--dissuaded me from taking a chance on Varejao.

66. Bradford A - Ty Lawson, PG, Denver Nuggets
Perfect sparkplug for my defense-oriented second unit and a counterpoint for Rondo on the first team.

67. Kevin A - Elton Brand, F/C, Philadelphia 76ers
After a healthy season, Brand has bounced back up the rankings. I preferred him to Paul Millsap because of his ability to play center in certain matchups.

68. Sebastian A - Paul Millsap, PF, Utah Jazz
Kevin passed up on Millsap, but I am going to go ahead and snap him up here for team A. I need a second big off of the bench, and while he can't play center, I have Marcus Camby to do that, so having Millsap backing up Tim Duncan is a pretty nice luxury to have.

69. Sebastian B - Kendrick Perkins, C, Oklahoma City Thunder
For team B, I am building a team that can score from every spot except for the center position, with Tyson Chandler playing a lot of defense. Ideally, I would have liked to take Emeka Okafor here, but grabbing Perkins means that if Chandler goes down with an injury, Perkins can hop in and the team won't really have to change a lot of things. He can also be the anchor of my second unit defensively as well.

70. Kevin B - Kyle Lowry, PG, Houston Rockets
2010-11 might prove Lowry's best season in the NBA, but he was one of the top dozen or so players at the league's most loaded position. As long as he maintains his ability to knock down an open shot from beyond the arc, his defense will make him a huge asset as a second-team point guard. I love the idea of turning him loose for 10 minutes a night of all-out pressure on the basketball.

71. Bradford B - Marcin Gortat, C, Phoenix Suns
I felt like this team needed bulk, both for its second unit and to complement the relatively undersized frontcourt duo of Noah and Horford on my first team. Gortat is best suited to backup duty, I think, where he can use his size and energy to bang people around and protect the basket. He's also got some offensive skill. I just need to convince him to accept playing off the bench.

72. Dan B - Luis Scola, PF, Houston Rockets
He's just a flat-out good player. I'm not sure how much he'll play on this team, but a more methodical pace should play to his skills when he gets minutes.
