Remember before the season when everybody thought that balance of power in the NBA may have shifted to the Eastern Conference? Well, a third of the way through the inter-conference schedule, it hasn't happened. Quite the opposite. Here's the ledger:
Overall: West 95-72 (.569)
East home: 43-37
East road: 29-58
West home: 58-29
West road: 37-43
Last year: West 246-240 (.506)
The West is well ahead of last year's pace despite the offseason moves that saw top-shelf talents like Amar'e Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer move to the East. Eastern Conference teams have played a few more games on the road so far, but you can't chalk up the disparity to that. West teams have won 2/3 of their home games while those from the East are barely break-even. Hmmm.

LIVE AT BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS
1. Building a Core: The Clippers' Young Cornerstones (Kevin Pelton) While it may not guarantee future success, the proven way to win in the NBA is to get star players. In Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon, the Los Angeles Clippers look like they might have two. (premium)
2. On the Beat: Shakeup Could Be in Store in Memphis (John Perrotto) The Memphis Grizzlies have been one of the league's most enigmatic teams this season, which could lead to moves before the February trade deadline. (premium)
3. Poll Position: Hoyas Shooting the Lights Out (John Gasaway) Led by the uber-efficient Austin Freeman, Georgetown's strong start this season has been powered by outstanding shooting from the field. In his feature for ESPN Insider, John looks at how John Thompson III has been able to thrive without Greg Monroe. (premium)
4. The List: Duke Starts No. 1 (John Perrotto) Basketball Prospectus' rankings, which are subjective but based on statistical analysis, debut with a familiar team at the top--the Duke Blue Devils. (premium)
5. The Clipboard: Rose Not Using New Jumper (Sebastian Pruiti) Derrick Rose worked hard to improve his shooting form over the summer, but while it has helped his accuracy beyond the arc, it's not working from closer distances because Rose prefers to use his less reliable floater. (premium)
6. Trend Watch: Rockets Score, Aldridge Dunks, Cavaliers Stumble (Kevin Pelton) In this week's edition of Trend Watch, the Houston Rockets are winning with offense for the first time in recent memory, LaMarcus Aldridge's finishing powers a strong four-game stretch and the Cleveland Cavaliers have had a December to forget. (premium)
7. Start/Sit Projections: Week of Dec. 27 (Kevin Pelton) The upcoming NBA week, which spans 2010 and 2011, sees Phoenix Suns big men Channing Frye and Robin Lopez get the benefit of a favorable schedule. (premium)
8. Brown Out in Charlotte (Kevin Pelton) (Unfiltered)
9. Can Al Nolen save Minnesota? (Ken Pomeroy) (Unfiltered)
10. St. John's: Back From the Brink? (Asher Fusco) After a disastrous loss at Fordham, Steve Lavin's team recovered nicely, beating Northwestern Tuesday night and winning the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. (premium)

NEWS & MOVES
Minutiae from around the league
NBA: "Who had four games/13 days in the pool for how long Steve Francis would last in China? Come on down and collect your winnings. Reports out of China have the Beijing Shougang Ducks cutting ties with Francis, something his agent confirmed to Sina Sports." (NBC Sports)
"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son." -- Dean Wormer.
CAVALIERS: "The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard/forward Alonzo Gee to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today. Per league and team policy, terms of the contract were not announced. Gee, 23, has played with the San Antonio Spurs (five games) and Washington Wizards (11 games) this season, averaging 2.1 points on .433 shooting and 1.6 rebounds in 9.3 minutes per game in a total of 16 games (five starts). He will wear No. 33 for the Cavs." (press release)
Seems like every year there is a player that everyone wants, just not enough to keep around for long. Gee has averaged 9.4 points per 40 minutes in his various stops this season.
WARRIORS: "The Golden State Warriors have assigned guard Jeremy Lin to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League, the team announced today. Lin, 22, has appeared in 17 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 1.9 points and 1.12 steals in 8.5 minutes per contest." (press release)
One of my favorite smalls sample stats of the season: Lin is averaging 5.2 steals per 40 minutes.

Note: WTC is a junk stat rating the "watchability" of a game, taking into
account the quality of the opponents and the likelihood of a close game.
Through Monday, 453 of 1,230 games (36.8 percent) have been played in the 2010-11 NBA regular season.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
