I need a little feedback today. I think the Roundup is pretty much in the format it's going to be going forward, but little tweaks here and there are inevitable. I think I'm getting pretty close on the game box scores because the messages I've received about them have dwindled. The one remaining issue is the playing time component. Currently, I'm listing PLY, which is an estimate of the actual possessions a player is on the court. Some of my responses indicate that this number lacks enough context to be useful. I've had requests to simply list minutes played. I'm resistant to do this for one reason: You can see that anywhere. I'm trying to use categories that you won't see in a traditional box score. Another suggestion is to convert the PLY to PLY%, that is instead of saying a player was on the court for 78 plays, for example, you'd say he received 80% of the available playing time for his position. If you have a preference, click on the e-mail link at the bottom of the page and let me know. I'll go with the majority.

BOX SCORES AND RECAPS
---------------------------------------------

Note: glossary follows recaps.

HAWKS 94, PISTONS 85 (box): The Pistons led for much of this game, but faltered down the stretch and remained winless. On the flip side, the Hawks stayed perfect in their best defensive performance yet. Detroit coach John Kuester benched starting guard Rodney Stuckey for all but three minutes in the second half, none of them coming in the fourth quarter. (The Detroit Free Press reported that Stuckey twice refused to enter the game.) He went with a lineup for almost the entire final period of Ben Gordon, Tracy McGrady, Tayshaun Prince, Greg Monroe and Charlie Villanueva. He often had Prince initiate the offense in this lineup, which he stuck with even after the Pistons' lead dwindled and disappeared. Monroe had his best game so far, but that's not saying much. He had seven points, eight boards--six offensive-- and three assists. Too often when Monroe doesn't have the ball in his hands, he looks like he just doesn't give a rip. Half-assed screens, walking from spot to spot, no conception of help defense. It's kind of easy to see why Kuester would be down on him, but his talent is also evident. I should also note that McGrady who, according to the Hawks announcers looked over at Kuester at one point down stretch and rolled his eyes at whatever the coach told him to do, played pretty well even though I shoveled a fair amount of dirt on him in yesterday's roundup. Detroit scored just four points in the final 6:13 of the game.

BOBCATS 85, NETS 83 (box): The Bobcats picked up their first win of the season in a game that was close throughout, if not particularly aesthetic. The Nets had the ball last. Devin Harris drove into the lane and kicked to Travis Outlaw along the baseline. Outlaw missed the jumper, a tip by Brook Lopez also was off the mark, then ball just sort of rolled around on the floor with everyone diving at it as the clock ran out. Stephen Jackson and D.J. Augustin, Charlotte's starting backcourt, shot 3-of-19 in the game.

MAGIC 128, TIMBERWOLVES 86 (box): The Timberwolves have to be thrilled to escape the state of Florida, where they were outscored by a combined 74 points in two games. Orlando has now won games by 29 and 42 points, and lost by 26. Next up is New Jersey at home, a game that NBAPET projects Orlando to win by 25./p>

76ERS 101, PACERS 75 (box): The Sixers picked up their first win of the season and the first for coach Doug Collins, who wasn't around to enjoy it. Collins left at halftime because of a recurrence of the vertigo-like symptoms that have been periodically bothering him. This game has to be viewed as a step back for the Pacers. Indy had three days off prior to the contest and had just handled Philadelphia by 13 points at home on Saturday. This game was never really competitive as the Sixes jumped out to a 26-point halftime lead. It was a much-needed win for Collins, whose team has now only been outscored by one point on the season but is just 1-4 to show for it. Philly has Cleveland at home next, but then sets out on a five-game road trip.

CELTICS 105, BUCKS 102 (box): In a really entertaining game in Boston, the Celtics rallied to beat the Bucks, who played their best game of the season in a losing cause. Milwaukee led by six with 3:29 to play in regulation, but then Ray Allen hit a three, then Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Garnett again converted conventional three-point plays on successive possessions. The onslaught turned Boston's six-point deficit into a six-point advantage with 1:20 to play. However, the Bucks came back to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Pierce scored 12 of Boston's 14 points and, in doing so, became the third Celtics player to surpass 20,000 points for his career. John Havlicek and Larry Bird are the others. The crowd gave Pierce a sustained roar of appreciation even after play continued and in his postgame on-court interview, Pierce was clearly emotional about the experience. Hard to believe he's been around so long.

HORNETS 107, ROCKETS 99 (box): The Hornets stayed perfect and the Rockets remained winless. It was a vintage Chris Paul performance as he put up 25 points on just 12 shots. The bubble burst for Luis Scola who entered the game averaging 27 points. Scola was held to nine on 4-of-15 shooting, but did end up with 16 rebounds and five assists. Yao Ming was a little more assertive, getting 15 points and five free-throw attempts. He shot just four free throws in his first two games.

MAVERICKS 102, NUGGETS 101 (box): Carmelo Anthony missed a shot at the buzzer as the Mavericks escaped with the road win. Anthony faced up Caron Butler in the waning seconds, but Butler did a good job of contesting Anthony's 17-footer as the buzzer sounded. Gary Forbes started for Denver with Nenê sitting out with a strained left groin. George Karl opted for a starting five featuring Forbes, Anthony and Shelden Williams as his frontline. Dirk Nowitzki took 31 shots and led the Mavericks with 35 points, scoring 13 of the team's 21 points in the final period.

SPURS 112, SUNS 110 (box): Richard Jefferson and Tim Duncan combined for 53 points on 20-of-26 shooting for the Spurs. Jefferson, who is averaging 20 points and has put up a True Shooting Percentage of .769 so far, drilled four threes from the corner in the game, the same shot over and over that has been coming from San Antonio small forwards for well over a decade. With each passing game, it's becoming more apparent that Hakim Warrick is a better option at the four than Hedo Turkoglu, who may simply be over the hill, even though by Suns standards he's a spring chicken at 32.

CLIPPERS 107, THUNDER 92 (box): The Clippers won their first game under Vinny Del Negro in a game that has to be highly troubling for Thunder fans. With worries about the team's defense floating around the Web, from Kevin Durant among others, Oklahoma City allowed a 114.9 Offensive Rating to the team with the worst attack in the league. Durant was awful in this one with the type of performance that we haven't seen much of since his rookie year. Durant was 6-of-24 from the field, committed six turnovers and missed all 10 of his three-point attempts. Eric Gordon continued his early-season emergence as L.A.'s best player with 27 points on 17 shots and now averaging 20 points with a .571 True Shooting Percentage.

LAKERS 112, KINGS 100 (box): The Lakers were the third unbeaten team to take the court Wednesday evening and became the third to remain perfect. Kobe Bryant's triple-double (30 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists) led the charge. Tyreke Evans scored 21 points for the Kings, but rolled an ankle, which limited him to 29 minutes and inhibited his ability to contain Bryant.

GLOSSARY
PLY is an estimate of how many possessions on which the player was on the court. USG is an estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted. Is an estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories. Plus-Minus (+/-) data is from official box scores from NBA.com. Game Rating (GR) reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game. TEAM STATS: PACE, or esimated possessions in the game; ORTG: a team's points per 100 possessions; eFG%: team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal; oRB%: percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass; TO%: percentage of at team's possessions resulting in a turnover; FTA%: percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
